Serving Berkeley since 1968

Halal beef bacon strips on the griddle

Bongo Burger has been at the corner of Dwight Way and Telegraph Avenue since 1968, a family-owned counter feeding students, faculty and the neighborhood with American burgers and Persian food side by side. The menu is bigger than it looks: beef, turkey, chicken, black bean and Impossible burgers, kebab and steak sandwiches, falafel, hummus, tabbouleh, dolma, eggs in the morning, baklava after.

The beef is Niman Ranch, pasture fed and antibiotic free. No trans fat or partially hydrogenated oils have been used since 2003. Hummus and tabbouleh are made fresh from whole ingredients every day. The crinkle-cut fries and onion rings are the ones regulars come back for.

The Persian Burger Sandwich, seasoned ground lamb on a toasted French roll, is the dish people mention first. It is halal, as are the Kebab Wrap and the beef bacon; the rest of the menu is not, and the counter will tell you straight.
